About georgia

Georgia is a country located near the borders of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, known as the Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is surrounded by Black Sea on its west, to the southeast by Azerbaijan, by Russia to the north and by Turkey and Armenia to the south. It has a population of almost 5 million people and its capital is called Tbilisi. Towards the end of the 12th century, the name Georgia was linked to St. George since the country showed particular allegiance towards him.

A Brief History

A unified kingdom made its appearance in Georgia, not before the 4th Century A.D. The early kingdoms faded away during the Middle Ages when the Arabs conquered it. The 12th and 13th Centuries saw a golden period as the renaissance took place. The Mongols took over the country and they were finally expelled. Following was a complex battle where smaller states of the country started demanding independence and this continued for quite some time.

Tsars started annexing parts.

Finally Georgia became independent in the year 1918 after the Russian revolution of 1917. Georgia entered in war with Armenia and was protected by British intervention but the country was again attacked and this time by the Red Army in 1921. Many Georgian men fought for the Red Army during World War II. The Soviet Union collapsed in the year 1991 and Georgia became independent; however, relations with Russia ceased to remain calm. Giorgi Margvelashvili is the current president of Georgia with Irakli Garibashvili as the prime minister.

The climate of Georgia is quite diverse considering how small the country is. It is the Greater Caucasus Mountain range which is fundamental is controlling the climate, protecting the country from chilling winds from the north, while the Lesser Caucasus Mountains is functional in the prevention of the flow of hot air from the south. Western Georgia experiences heavy rainfall during the months of Autumn, the lowlands are more or less warm throughout the year and the mountains and foothills have wet and cool summers and snowy winters. In Eastern Georgia, the climate is comparatively drier, summers are warmer and winters are less cold.

Culture

The roots of Georgian culture lies in Iberian and Colchian cultures. The 11TH Century renaissance brought with it a great rise and development in literature, philosophy, science, architecture and the arts. The classical language of the country was revived during the 19th century after a lot of battle. Georgia has been culturally influenced by the Roman, Greece, Byzantine and Russian Empires.
